Is Microsoft Teams included in Office?

This is one of the most common questions we hear. The answer depends on whether you buy a one-time Office licence or a Microsoft 365 subscription — and the difference matters.

The short answer

Teams is included only in Microsoft 365 subscriptions. One-time Office editions bought outright — Office 2024, Office 2021, Office 2019 — do not include Microsoft Teams. That is no great loss: anyone can download the free version of Teams separately and use it indefinitely.

Why is that? Teams is a cloud service rather than a conventional application. It is updated continuously on the server, so Microsoft ties it to a subscription rather than a one-time licence.

How to get Teams free

Go to microsoft.com/microsoft-teams/download-app.
Download and install Teams on your computer or phone.
Sign in with any Microsoft account (a free Outlook.com address works).
You can start creating meetings and inviting people by link straight away.

This works well if you have bought Office 2024 and only need the occasional video call.

So what should you choose?

Choose one-time Office if…

you use Teams rarely, would rather not pay every year, and want a licence that lasts indefinitely. Free Teams will be plenty.

Choose Microsoft 365 if…

you use Teams for work every day and need long meetings, recordings, file collaboration and 1 TB of cloud storage.
